Houston Preliminary Competition

The Consulate General of the Republic of Korea in Houston and the Houston Korean Education Center will host the Regional Preliminary Competition (Houston) for 2018 K-Pop World Festival on July 7th, 2018. This is your chance to compete to represent the U.S. at the 2018 K-Pop World Festival taking place in Korea this fall!

Hosted by the Korean Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism, and the Korean Broadcasting System(KBS), the 2018 K-Pop World Festival invites K-Pop cover dance and cover song artists around the world to claim their spot in the finals after participating in their respective regional preliminaries.

To be considered for the Houston Preliminary Competition, please submit your application before June 18th 2018.

Application and selection process

STEP 1: APPLY

Submit your complete Application Form and your performance video to Korea.RSVP@gmail.com before June 18th 2018. The video should be between 3 and 6 mins and clearly capture your performance.

STEP 2: SCREEN & SELECT

Our team will screen all applicants and choose 10 dance groups in the performance category and 5 singers (or groups of singers) in the vocal category, allowing them into the Houston Preliminary Competition which will be held on July 7, 2018 at the Conrad Ballroom, Conrad N. Hilton College of the University of Houston.

STEP 3: WINNERS OF HOUSTON PRELIMINARY COMPETITION

At the Houston Preliminary Competition, two winning teams will be selected by a panel of judges on-site (1 performance winner and 1 vocal winner OR 2 performance winners). The winners will get a chance to send their video to the online semifinals to advance to the Final event in Changwon, Korea, and to perform at the Korean Festival in October this year in Houston.

Application

The Rules

1- General Overview
  • Each regional preliminary will produce 1 vocal team and 1 dance team that will advance to the online semifinals (or 2 dance teams should the judges decide so) .

  • Contestants from across the U.S. can compete in the Houston preliminaries.

  • Regional Preliminary performances will be recorded to be submitted for review atthe Online Semifinal Stage.

  • For the Online Semifinal Stage, a panel of judges comprised of K-Pop industry professionals and KBS staff will review all video submissions of regional winners around the world, and select the teams that will compete in the 2018 K-Pop World Festival Finals.

2- Contestants Eligibility & Requirements
  • Contestants must be able to travel overseas. Please make sure you will have a valid passport if you are selected as a finalist.

  • Contestants must be non-Korean heritage, so you are not eligible to enter if either of your parents held Korean citizenship at any point.

  • Contestants under the age of 18 must submit their parents’ signed consent to participate in the finals and to travel overseas.

3- Houston Preliminaries
Song Selection:
  • Your song selection must be between 3 and 6 minutes. The audio file must not contain any swearing or explicit lyrics, and the song title (and artist) should be sent by June 18th (with your application form). If you are selected to compete in the Houston preliminaries, your final audio file should be sent no later than July 2nd. Please bring a back-up copy on a USB flash drive on the day of the event.

  • Vocal groups cannot have more than 3 members per team (including backup dancers if you choose to include them).

Performance logistics:
  • Dance groups must have the same number of members—or less—as the original performance group (ex: performing Bad Boy by Red Velvet means that you should have as many as 5 people on stage, or less).

  • No form of liquid, gel, aerosol, glitter or any other material that can adversely affect the dancing surface may be used. If props are to be used, please inform the staff beforehand for approval. Dangerous props are prohibited.

  • We will not be held liable for any injury or damage that may occur during the event.

  • Media: By participating in the contest, participants agree and give their permission for the K-Pop World Festival staff to record, film, photograph, audiotape or videotape their performances, and to display, publish or distribute these works for publicity or advertising purposes.

  • Vocal groups cannot have more than 3 members per team (including backup dancers if you choose to include them).

  • The performance winner team will sing in Korean and dance when they send their video for the online semifinal.

Judging Criteria:
  • Contestants will be judged based on stage presence, technique, visual, execution of skills, and overall performance.
